PDF template cannot be uploaded

Question

An error appears when uploading a PDF template in the PDF options. Some PDFs work without problems, others do not. What is the reason for this?

Answer

The problem lies in the way the PDF file was created. Certain programs (especially Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker on Windows) create PDFs with a special compression that cannot be processed.

Solution: Export PDF correctly

Do not use "Adobe PDF" for PDF export, but the integrated export function:

In Microsoft Word:

  • File → Save as → PDF (with "Optimum quality")
  • Or: File → Export → Create PDF

This method creates a compatible file that can be uploaded as a template.

Alternative: Save PDF again

If the file already exists, it can be saved again using a PDF printer:

  • Windows: Print → select "Microsoft Print to PDF"
  • MacOS: Print → PDF → Save as PDF

This creates a new, compatible PDF file.

Note on encryption

Some PDFs have invisible encryption (even without a password). This can also be removed by "reprinting" using a PDF printer.
