Error Message When Submitting Due to an Umlaut in the Email Address

Question

> An error message appears when submitting a configuration request. The error does not occur for all customers, but only in some cases.

Answer

A common cause is an email address containing an umlaut or special characters in the local part (before the @) that a customer has entered in the form. Examples: müller@example.de, ö.name@web.de.

Technically, such addresses are not universally supported under an older standard (RFC 5321)—many email systems and validation mechanisms reject them.

Solution

  1. Ask the affected customer to use an alternative email address without umlauts or special characters.
  2. If your form requires an email address, you can add a corresponding note to the description text, e.g.:
“Please use an email address without umlauts (ä, ö, ü) or special characters.”
Why does this happen?

Email addresses with umlauts in the local part (before the @) are technically possible (internationalized email addresses, RFC 6530), but are not yet fully supported by many mail servers and systems. Standard email addresses consist exclusively of ASCII characters.
